Is it against the law for a parent to read their 18 year old's text messages?

Is it against the law for a parent to read their 18 year old's text messages? Laws differ state by state, but generally is it? I'm wondering, in particular, Ohio. And what the crime is classified as.Is it against the law for a parent to read their 18 year old's text messages?
Nope, not at all. If you left your diary out, it's not illegal to read that either. Invasive and untrustworthy, but not illegal.

Turn the password function on your phone to ';on';, and they won't be able to anymore. Is it against the law for a parent to read their 18 year old's text messages?
Generally? Not if the parent is paying for the phone.

If you are 18, still living at home, immature enough not to be trusted by your parents then you can expect they will try to check on you using every means available.

At 18 a person is old enough to have their own place then this would not be a problem. If your parent has to break into your home to get to the text messages then it is probably a crime.

Good Luck
if it is not illegal it should be. Once you turn 18 oyu technically do not have to answer to your parents neither are they responsible for you. HOwever, if you are 18 and stil.l living at home and oyur parents are supporting you I suggest you move out and get responsible for yourself because they have a right to know what is coming into their home.
Depends.

Who is paying the bill for the phone?

If the parents are, then any texts are the property of the person(s) who pays the bill.

If the 18 year old is, then it is up to them to cut off the parent's ability to see the texts.

I doubt there would be any legal ramifications though.
Depends on who owns the phone. If the 18 year old's name is on the phone, then the parent likely has few rights.

If the parent owns the phone, then the parent has full rights, under the law, to the phone.
I would assume that at 18 a person would be smart enough to....

-password the phone

-inform friends to keep it short and sweet

-they don't say stupid crap

-and you are adult enough now to not need to text every 5 minutes

You just get another phone.
If you pay the phone bill, yes. If they pay the phone bill, no.
Depends on who pays for the phone
