Why do unemployed Americans stay in their parent's basements?

Not sure if this is just a movie thing or a euphemism, but somehow a broke fresh graduate or 'loser' type character will be shown as staying in their parent's basement.

Didn't they have a room in the first place? When they were children, people don't grow much more after 16/17 years old.

What happens to the room? Why do unemployed Americans stay in their parent's basements?
they usually leave home first. during that time, their old room gets converted into a hobby room or home office. when forced to move back home, all thats left is the basement and sometimes the RV.Why do unemployed Americans stay in their parent's basements?
A lot of unemployed americans don't stay in their parent's basements. I would say once the persons has moved out of their parent's home, the parent sometimes turn their bedrooms into an office of exercise room because they believe their kids want be coming back, but with the way the economy is today and a lot people loosing their jobs some unemployed americans end up back home and since the parent turned their room into an office or exercise room then they end up in the basement.
The basement is usually larger with more privacy. I'm sure some people just stay in their original rooms though. Not everybody has a basement.
Some people have their own bedroom. Not all stay in their parent's basement.
Because thay can't pay bills!
many live in the streets.. option 1 is better
the room gets taken by a younger sibling
